  • DCD Course celebrates 30 years.

2010

  • March Short Course in Dermoscopy is launched.

  • New design departmental website launched.

  • New departmental logo launched.

  • Diploma in Practical Dermatology celebrates 20 years of distance learning.

June

  • Department wins Time Higher Leadership & Management Awards in ‘Outstanding ICT Initiative’ category.

July

  • Prof Andrew Y Finlay retires as Head of Department.

September

  • DPD (Skin Cancer) is launched for Australasian students and DPD MSc course launches with 17 students.

October

  • Department shortlisted for Time Higher Award in ‘Outstanding ICT Initiative’ category.

November

  • 5th Annual DCPDS Meeting in Cardiff.

2008

October

  • First DPD international study meeting held at the United Christian Hospital in Hong Kong.

November

  • Global University Project launched providing live surgery sessions for DCD students and DCPDS members.

2007

  • First DPD examinations held in Hong Kong.
  • Prof Finlay’s book ‘Specialist Training in Dermatology’ published.
  • Dr Maria Gonzalez, responsible for leading the postgraduate teaching programmes, is appointed Reader in Dermatology.

2006

September

  • DPD student intake increases to 400 per year on the course.

November

  • Department shortlisted for Times Higher Education Award in ‘Most imaginative use of distance learning’ category.

2002-2005

2002

  • Dr Maria Gonzalez becomes Courses Director and the first Department of Dermatology website is launched.

2003

  • Dr Maria Gonzalez wins the Welsh Woman of the Year award for ‘Woman as Educator’.
  • DPD Exam format changes to its current format of an online theory exam and an OSCE style clinical station exam.
  • SARS virus in China postpones DPD examinations.

2004

  • August – University of Wales College of Medicine merges with Cardiff University.

2005

  • Interactive modules launched using Camtasia software through the D2L portal.

1988-1999

1988

  • May - DPD concept developed by Dr Andrew Finlay.

1989

  • April – 40 students enrol onto the first DPD course - a paper based distance-learning course.

1990

  • March – First Practical Dermatology Diplomas awarded.

1991

  • April – First overseas students enroll onto DPD.

1992

  • April - DLQI copyrighted by Dr Andrew Finlay and Dr G K Khan leading to the development of new dermatology quality of life measures that are now used worldwide.

1994

  • January - First DPD study meeting overseas (in Kuala Lumpur).

1995

  • January – First DPD study meeting in Hong Kong.

1999

  • Professor Andrew Finlay appointed head of the academic unit, following Professor Marks.

1906-1987

1906

  • Clinical dermatology service becomes available in Cardiff, when Dr Owen Rhys provides dermatology x-ray treatments at the Cardiff Royal Infirmary.

1923

  • Dr James Beatty becomes the first Honorary Dermatologist in Cardiff.

1937

  • Dr Francis Bettley becomes an Honorary Dermatologist.

1946

  • Dr Geoffrey Hodgson becomes an Honorary Dermatologist.

1950

  • Dr Arthur Rook becomes a consultant dermatologist in Cardiff. He later moved to Cambridge and wrote the first "Rook Book".

1952

  • Dr Geoffrey Hodgson helps organise the World Congress of Dermatology in London.

1953

  • Dr Eric Waddington (WHO IS HE?) contributes to the differentiation of pemphigoid as a separate disease from pemphigus.

1965

  • Dr Charles Long provides dermatology services both in Cardiff and in Mid Glamorgan.

1971

  • The Dermatology Department becomes the first clinical service to move into the new University Hospital of Wales, and the Queen visits the dermatology ward when opening the hospital.

1973

  • Professor Ronald Marks comes to Cardiff as the first Senior Lecturer in Dermatology and his creation of new postgraduate teaching courses and organisation of many international meetings puts Cardiff at the forefront of dermatology research and teaching.

1975

  • Dr Arthur Knight, a superb dermatopathology teacher, becomes a consultant dermatologist at Cardiff.

1978

  • Consultant dermatologist Dr Peter Holt, lays the foundations of the renowned Dermatology Surgery Unit. The Unit is now run by Dr Richard Motley and Dr Andrew Morris and remains a leading influence in British Dermatology surgery with new technique development and superb training.

1982

  • DCD course launched.

1987

  • The clinical service at Llandough University Hospital is established (now led by Dr Colin Long).
