Clinical Activities

The Department of Dermatology in Cardiff has an international reputation for teaching and research in dermatology. The teaching department, outpatients, research laboratories and inpatient and outpatient treatment areas are all combined in the large and modern campus of the University Hospital of Wales and the Wales College of Medicine. The clinical dermatology service is the main University dermatology referral centre for Wales and serves a large population. It has a designated dermatology building which houses a team of six dermatologists and ten dermatologists in training who manage busy outpatient clinics, treatment centre, photobiology and specialist patch test services. In addition there is a very active dermatology surgery service which is based in specifically designed operating theatres which incorporate Moh’s micrographic surgery, a variety of lasers and intense pulsed light systems. There is a large dermatology nursing team who provide day care and inpatient care to dermatological chronic disease patients, in particular there are three dermatology specialist nurses who run dedicated nurse-led services, including phototherapy and a specialist dermatological surgical nurse who all provide a high quality service for patients.
