Queen’s Birthday Honour for Professor Andrew Y Finlay

Prof Andrew Finlay CBE

In June, University academics and alumni were recognised in this years’ Queen’s Birthday Honours for their outstanding contribution to all areas of society. Our former departmental head, Professor Andrew Finlay, was honoured with a CBE for services to medicine.

Prof Finlay has led pioneering research into the development and validation of questionnaires to measure the severe impact that skin disease can have on people’s lives. These questionnaires are now in standard use across the world in up to 70 languages. He also created the Diploma in Practical Dermatology course, which has been completed by over 3000 GPs from across the world since 1989. Professor Finlay was President of the British Association of Dermatologists and was awarded the Herman Musaph Medal in 2007 for his contribution to psychodermatology in Europe.

Since his retirement last year, Professor Finlay has continued to supervise quality of life research at the School of Medicine.

Speaking about the award, Professor Finlay said “It is a great honour to be awarded a CBE. It is very pleasing that the achievements of the Cardiff Dermatology Department should be recognised in this way. The success of our quality of life research work and of our international teaching programmes has only been possible because of the outstanding team of dermatologists, nurses, researchers and administrators in the Dermatology Department. I have been very fortunate to have worked with this world-class clinical, research and teaching team.”
